Background of the Study

Effective communication between oncology nurses and patients is a critical factor in the management of cancer. Cancer treatment is complex and often involves multiple modalities such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. For patients to successfully navigate this process, it is essential that they understand their diagnosis, treatment options, potential side effects, and the importance of adhering to prescribed treatment regimens. Oncology nurses, who are at the forefront of patient care, play a key role in facilitating this communication.

At Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, oncology nurses are responsible for ensuring that patients understand their treatment plans and are motivated to adhere to them. However, treatment adherence remains a challenge in many cancer patients, and ineffective communication may contribute to poor adherence. Poor communication between oncology nurses and patients can result in misunderstandings, anxiety, and non-compliance with treatment, all of which can negatively affect patient outcomes.

This study aims to explore the relationship between oncology nurse-patient communication and treatment adherence at Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki. It will examine how communication strategies employed by oncology nurses influence patients' understanding of their treatment plans and their commitment to following prescribed treatments. By gaining insight into the dynamics of nurse-patient communication, the study will provide recommendations to improve communication strategies and, ultimately, treatment adherence.

Statement of the Problem (300 words)

Cancer patients often face significant challenges in adhering to prescribed treatment regimens due to the complexity and side effects of cancer treatments. At Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, oncology nurses play a key role in communicating with patients about their diagnosis, treatment options, and potential side effects. However, ineffective communication may contribute to misunderstandings, fear, and non-adherence to treatment plans.

Despite the recognized importance of nurse-patient communication in oncology care, there is limited research on how communication between oncology nurses and cancer patients influences treatment adherence in Nigerian hospitals. At Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, many patients fail to adhere to treatment regimens, which can negatively impact their prognosis and overall well-being. The role of oncology nurses in facilitating effective communication with patients is therefore crucial.

This study seeks to examine the relationship between oncology nurse-patient communication and treatment adherence at Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki. By exploring how communication strategies affect patients' adherence to treatment, this study aims to identify key factors that influence treatment success and provide insights into how oncology nurses can improve patient outcomes through better communication practices.

Objectives of the Study

1. To examine the role of oncology nurse-patient communication in promoting treatment adherence at Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.

2. To assess the communication strategies used by oncology nurses to improve treatment adherence among cancer patients.

3. To evaluate the relationship between effective communication and patient adherence to cancer treatment at Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.

Research Questions

1. How does oncology nurse-patient communication impact treatment adherence at Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki?

2. What communication strategies are used by oncology nurses to enhance treatment adherence among cancer patients?

3. What is the relationship between effective oncology nurse-patient communication and treatment adherence?

Research Hypotheses

1. H₀: Oncology nurse-patient communication does not significantly impact treatment adherence at Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.

2. H₀: There is no significant relationship between communication strategies used by oncology nurses and treatment adherence among cancer patients.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on oncology nurse-patient communication at Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki. Limitations may include variability in communication styles among nurses and patients' personal attitudes toward cancer treatment.

Definitions of Terms
